On August 6, 2015, the Global Health
Strategies (GHS) and Governance & Public Policy Initiative-Centre for
Policy Research (GPPI-CPR) organised an agenda focused meeting of the core members of ‘The Political
Leaders’ Forum on Child Survival’. Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal, MP,
BJP chaired this meeting. During this meeting, the future agenda for the Forum
including the registration of the Trust was discussed. 11 multi-party group of MPs participated in this meeting.
The meeting began with a brief
introduction from Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal regarding the broad issues and challenges
of Healthcare in India. Dr. Jaiswal shared his experience on how they worked in
the past with parliamentary forums for child survival and malnutrition. He
spoke about the formation of a parliamentary forum like that of HIV-Aids forum,
that would have a focused discussion on health related issues and challenges
within the country.
Dr. Santosh Mehrotra, Human
Development Economist, gave a presentation outlining some of the major aspects
that require to be addressed with regard to healthcare in the country. He
discussed about the possible alternative mechanisms for financing in
healthcare. Drawing on examples from
around the world such as Mexico, Bhutan and Africa, that have devised
innovative strategies for encouraging healthcare, he outlined ways in which the
country could upgrade its health care.
